What will our mathematicians, accountants, economists, actuaries and engineers do when they leave us?

At St Mary's CofE (Aided) Primary School, we want our mathematicians to develop an appreciation of the power of mathematics. They will be mathematicians who are curious, thoughtful and think deeply about the world, approaching problems creatively and flexibly, including breaking problems down into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

They will have an understanding of the concepts which underpin procedures, the ability to reason mathematically and to make rich connections between the different mathematical domains and talk about their learning to help solve everyday problems They will ‘know’ numbers; develop a number sense and be able to recall and apply knowledge rapidly, accurately and efficiently. They will be able to move fluently between different representations of mathematical ideas and will be able to use manipulatives to model their mathematical thinking through a process of concrete, abstract and pictorial representations.

We follow the White Rose Scheme in Mathematics. This supports a child in developing a concrete understanding of number through a visual understanding to a sound understanding of number at an abstract level. We ensure that there are regular opportunities for pupils to use their number skills in problem-solving situations and expect pupils to use mathematical language when explaining their work.

Implementation
We implement the curriculum as seen below on the medium term plan.

Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
  • Images of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Pupils' books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
  • Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.
