Design and Technology
What will our designers, chefs, manufacturers and inventors be able to do when they leave us?
By the time our designers leave St Mary's CofE (Aided) Primary School, they will have become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
They will have been inspired by a range of careers such as inventors, designers, engineers, chefs and manufacturers who have developed ground-breaking products and, in doing so, have made the world a better place.
St Mary's pupils will be able to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others. They will use their creativity and imagination with confidence, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
They will be given the opportunities to collaborate with others and to reflect on the products they have created, such as food products, packaging, windmills, masks and jewellery. Each year, the children will utilise their skills and knowledge within the field of Design Technology to make the world a better place by designing, making and selling products at the summer fair and other events, such as the local Pulborough market.

We implement the curriculum as seen below on the medium term plan.
Impact
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
- Images of the children’s practical learning.
- Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
- Pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
- Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.

DT CPD for staff
On our staff INSET Day we looked at the process that children need to go through.
Explore, Design, Make and Evaluate - The staff looked at the designer Robert Sabuda and some of his pop up books. The staff then looked at a design and looked at joining techniques and made their final product.
The staff looked at applying this process to other areas of the DT curriculum. We thought about sandwiches, pizzas, fruit salads, cushions and wind turbines.
